Conan The Barbarian

Conan the Barbarian.

The image on my cover is digital art. Like most of my work, it's a combination of 3D models created in ZBrush and Blender and then retouched in Photoshop.

Now, my cover definitely isn't a real painting. It's a combination of 3D models and a lot of retouching afterward in Photoshop trying to imitate the style of a painting. There are several examples of this hybrid work method between 3D and 2D on my Artstation

I first start modeling the character in ZBrush and Blender

This part I consider very important because it's where I truly do all the character design. From how he looks to his body language, passing through the design of all his clothing, accessories, etc.

I actually start the color stage from Zbrush by painting directly onto the 3D geometry with polypainting.

From there, I take it to Photoshop and start adding a background and then begin retouching and combining different passes with various materials and lights for the hair, the head and the body

I do a paintover to correct the proportions and silhouettes to make it look better in the illustration, Then I begin to detail the rest of the parts, the Conan's skirt and his sword following exactly the same techniques described in the previous steps

The final step, adding more details, the snowflakes, the bloodstains, the reflections of light between the trees on the ground, correcting some things that I didn't like about the background.
